Why laser printers? The average laser printer costs about $600, while the average color inkjet printer costs about $100. Why then, do we deal almost exclusively in laser printers? It's because Inkjet printers are not in the same class as laserjet printers — it's that simple. We consider lasers to be business-class printers and inkjets to be home printers.Let's start with the well known speed and reliability advantages the laser printers have over inkjets. (While you're waiting for the inkjet to print, and you hear the inkjet jockeying its printhead back and forth, what it's doing is wiping excess ink off the bottom of the cartridges. This expensive ink simply drops onto a sponge in the bottom of the printer. With even a moderate amount of printing, this ink will pile up to the level of the cartridge within a couple of years; end result, you must then buy a new printer.) And the low initial cost of the inkjet printers is a mirage; they should (and almost do) give these things away to gain the privilege of selling you ink. | Why not inkjet? Even without considering the ink that's wasted into the bottom of your printer, here are some other facts: The average price of a set of inkjet cartridges (black and color) is around $30 each, a total of $60, which is about the same as the average cost of a laser toner cartridge. But HP's specifications show that the inkjet cartridges will print only about 750 pages, whereas laser toners are good for an average of about 5,000 pages — more in larger models. Think about it. If gasoline costs about $1.50, would you buy a car that used a type of gas that costs 5,000/750 x $1.50 = $10.00 per gallon? Another way to look at it is that if your office prints only around 100 pages per day, 500 pages per week, the $500 initial purchase advantage of the inkjet will disappear in less than 13 weeks. (You do the math.) From then on, you're just supplying HP with a money tree that drops a $10 bill on them every day you use the inkjet in your business. No wonder they almost give inkjet style printers away! |
